Recently, there has been a great interest in ways of reducing aerodynamic and hydrodynamic drag on foils. The optimum condition happens when the ratio of lift to drag is at its highest. Jikan is going to optimize hydrofoil performance using surface nano-engineering and surface patterning instead of optimizing the geometry. We have numerically shown that using superhydrophobic surfaces we could affect the separation point, boundary layer thickness, velocity and pressure contours and drag and lift forces, consequently. In the next step, we tried to apply optimization algorithms to find the desired location on the surface of a foil to convert to superhydrophobic surfaces.
